Here at Ridgeway we offer a puppy familiarisation service in order to get your puppy used to the sounds, smells and sights of the grooming studio. We believe that regular grooming is important for dogs of all ages and when it comes to puppies, it is beneficial for them to be introduced to grooming as soon as possible. We would ask that puppies have all their jabs and are at least 12 weeks old and for this service, no older than 16 weeks.

The session itself will include the following:

A chance to look around and explore the studio, after which he or she will be lifted and placed on the grooming table. The table can be raised up and down and we will let your puppy experience this fun movement!

Brushes and other equipment will be introduced to your puppy whilst on the table so that they can have a smell and a good look at them. Once they are happy with them, we will give them a light grooming so that they can get used to the feeling!

We will also start picking up their paws and having a close look at them so that they will be happy for someone to do this in the future and if needed, we can give the nails a free clip, this will get them used to the sensation and help minimise your risk of puppy scratches when you play!

Here at Ridgeway we believe wholeheartedly in humane grooming and we strictly abide by the Animal Welfare Act. We will only de-mat or consider shaving (using our specialist equipment) if we believe the dog will feel no pain.

It is the owners' duty of care towards their pet to maintain the coat between professional grooming sessions. If owners fail to attend to their pet's coat, then in the interest of the animal we will shave off matted areas to prevent unnecessary suffering. We will be more than happy to show you how to look after your pet's coat at home.

If and when a dog is presented at the studio in a severely matted condition, it is our policy to shave the whole coat using electric clippers with a close blade. To de-mat would cause the animal tremendous stress and discomfort and often leaves a very thin and damaged coat. Shaving the coat is kinder to the dog. Many dogs are traumatised by unnecessary hours of de-matting, putting them off grooming for life. We consider shaving an act of kindness.

Due to the lengthy and tedious nature of de-matting, additional time will be charged.
